 Eliza Johnson taught her husband to read.

Eliza was born in Leesburg, TN. 1865
Parents: Sarah Phillips, John McCardle

2. Did she have any formal education? 
Eliza received a good, basic education.

3. Did she have any hobbies?
House keeping and raising their 5 children had much to do with Johnson’s success.

4. When was her husband president? 
Andrew Johnson became president when President Lincoln died, April 14th 1865.

5. Name a few things she did as first lady.
Traveled to D.C. to be with Andrew
She taught him how to read.

7. Was there a wedding at the White House? None

8. Was she involved in any charity? Not that we know.

9. What is something unique about her life?
Rebel forces caught Eliza at home with part of the family. Only after months of uncertainty did they rejoin Johnson in Nashville. Eliza was an invalid for life.
