Green Lawn Guest House

There are many things that contribute to the unique history of Unionville. The Green Lawn Guest House is just one of the important landmarks that have helped to keep our town’s character. Over time, its many roles have projected its importance.

The Green Lawn Guest House, formerly known as the Green Lawn Seminary for Girls, has played an important part in Unionville’s history, beginning when it was built in 1842. It was run by principal, Edith Chalfant, the entire time it remained as a seminary. The building opened as a day school for girls only. However, as more income became necessary, it changed into a boarding school. Before it closed as a school for good, the principal also admitted boy students. After eighteen years, the Civil War caused people to stop sending their children out to the school, and it became a private home.

The original brick structure of the house eventually received an addition of bathrooms on one side of the house. A summer porch was also added in the back, which was later renovated to become the kitchen. Today, the house has three stories and a basement. It is located at 808 Wollaston Road near the Unionville Presbyterian Church.

In October of 1999, the home was opened for business as the Green Lawn Guest House, restoring part of its original name. There are four guest rooms with master suite and single accommodations.

The Green Lawn Guest House continues to remind people of our past. The history of its architecture and use tell us so much about its surrounding life in Unionville. We are fortunate to have this building available to us in such excellent condition.
