Charles
F. Patton Middle School Unionville History
Project
Welcome to the G-Team virtual museum of
Unionville. This site was developed by the
eighth grade students at Charles F. Patton
Middle School with the help of community
members. The primary objective of this
project is to develop a historical web
site that will chronicle the rich history
of our community. Our long term goal is to
establish and maintain a comprehensive
virtual museum on the Internet that tells
the history of the communities of the
Unionville-Chadds Ford School
District.
Due
to the lack of published historical
information on our area, community members
were invited to come to the classroom to
tell their stories. Many people opened
their homes for the students to come
photograph and learn the rich history of
their property. In addition, Mrs. Meg
Basilio and Miss Shannon Tate attended
meetings of the East Marlborough Township
Historical Commission, introducing the
project to them and inviting them to share
their expertise on local history with the
students.
Once
the gathering of historical information
was complete, students conducted
interviews, scanned maps and photographs,
and wrote essays detailing the
information. All students participated in
every phase of development of the site.
This project will be ongoing. Even though
this started as an English/History project
to meet our school curriculum guidelines,
it serves to a wider audience such as
students studying history of this area,
and of course the community at
large.
The
Unionville-Chadds Ford School District
spans 77 square miles and seven townships,
providing future students with countless
numbers of topics about which to research.
Through the creation of the web site, it
is anticipated that the students will not
only master the curricular concepts that
are required, but also to gain an
understanding and appreciation for the
community in which they live.
We
have enjoyed the comments from people all
over the country who have found this site
when looking for historical information
about Chester County. This has led to a
renewed sense of pride about what an
impact our students work and this small
community can have on other people.
