Marlborough Village

Marlborough Village is a place of historical beauty. Located on Marlborough Road in East Marlborough township, people have lived there for over one hundred years. Marlborough Village has many interesting structures, and has withstood the test of time, remaining an active part of the community.

The Martin house and can be found on Marlborough Road along with almost all of the other houses in Marlborough Village. The Martin house was built before 1850. It was the home of Isaac Martin and his family. Isaac Martin was the village schoolmaster, a memoirist, and the jack of all trades. It was connected to Isaac Martin’s sister’s house in 1850. Walton Martin (Isaac's son) grew up here and later went to the Union Army. After his service, he moved back to Marlborough Village.

Another interesting home is the Brown house. This was built in 1948. The Browns lived here and operated the greenhouses in the area. Only one of these greenhouses still has a standing structure. The house is made from concrete and has a stucco siding. The Brown house is one of the newer homes in Marlborough Village, but it and the people who live in it still made a difference in the village. This house, which was a mail order house, is the model “Ardara." Two men named Sears and Roebuck created the idea for a mail order house. The business did well, and the "Ardara" was only one of the many house designs they sold. This is very unusual because it is the only home in the village that was a mail order home. It was built on the previous site of the Marlborough school. The school was built in 1834, but was torn down in 1927.

The Ford house is another historical home located in Marlborough Village. John Ford was a blacksmith that worked down the street at Caleb Wickersham’s shop. Later on, the Browns owned this house. Recently, the Brown family was going to tear the house down. Then they took off the siding and found the original logs that were used to build it! Never before had anyone known that it was a log house. The Browns also found the hand wrought nails used in the floorboards and staircase. Due to this, the house will be protected from being destroyed in the future, as it is now considered to be a historical home and is protected under the law.

The meeting house was one of the first buildings in Marlborough Village. When it was built in 1801, Marlborough Village had quickly grown into a small village. The land for the meeting house has a story behind it.. Two farmers were having a fight and wouldn’t talk to each other. Eventually they made up and they both donated the land for the meeting house as a type of “treaty”. The meetinghouse was made according to Quaker rules. It is divided in half with seating for men on one side and women on the other. The burial ground is located outside with many graves for the men who went to fight in the Civil War despite their religious belief. They really felt that they needed to help to free the slaves and reunite the states.

In conclusion, Marlborough Village is full of many interesting structures and stories to remember. The people who lived in Marlborough Village all worked together and helped each other throughout their lives. The most interesting thing about Marlborough Village is that it has gone through so much, for so long, and is so rich historically.
