-Jeremiah Bailey by Rebecca Anne Baily

The Genealogy of the Baily Family by Gilbert Cope, published in 1912, gives accounts of the Baily family. Although the family tree branches out in many directions, the following is an account of the direct track of the last seven generations.

Joel BAYLY, the colonist, married Ann Short, a passenger on the ship "Welcome" with William Penn. Joel and Ann's son, Joel BAILY (notice the difference in the spelling), married Betty Caldwell at the West Marlborough Meeting. This Joel was the first BAILY born in this country. His birth date was December 17, 1697.
Joel Baily's son, Isaac Baily, born in 1743, of Marlborough married Lydia Gilpin Painter. Their issue (children) included James Baily, who married Esther James.James and Esther James Baily's son was born in Baltimore, MD, in 1816, and was named Abram W. Baily.

Abram W. Baily (1816 - 1872) built a large stone mansion in Tanguy, PA, before or after he was married to Mary Hoopes. They were married on May 14, 1840. Abram's oil portrait hangs on the wall in the parlor at our Pocopson Meadow Farm to date. Abram and Mary's first born was John H. Baily, born February 10, 1841. Their second was James W. Baily, born on May 17, 1842, in London Grove, PA. This James W. Baily is my great-great grandfather.

Major Ruff in Philadelphia, PA mustered great-great grandfather, James Baily into service on August 10, 1861. His commanding officers were Captain Timothy Hennessy and Captain George Kerr of the 5th Regiment, Company G of the Twelfth Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. Great-great grandfather served four years as a Private. He was engaged in the following battles of the Civil War: Flint Hill, VA, February 14, 1862, Hunter's Mills, VA February 22, 1862, Williamsburg, VA September 9, 1862, Williamsburg, VA April 3, 1863, Williamsburg, VA April 11, 1863, Baltimore Cross Roads, VA July 3, 1863, Baltimore Cross Roads, VA July 6, 1863, New Kent Courthouse, VA August 29, 1863.

James W. Baily (1842 - 1918) married Alice Stackhouse of Tanguy, PA. Their issue was: Abram W., Cora E., Emlen J., and M. Adele. Great-great grandfather James told his son Abram, that he ran away from home to join the Grand Army of the Republic. Coming from a Friends (Quaker) family, this must have been a shock.

Abram W. Baily (James' son) was born on July 3, 1868. He married Ida M. Barnard, of Barnard Crossing, Pocopson Township, on September 25, 1901. Abram and Ida named their farm in Pocopson Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, "Pocopson Meadow Farm". Their children were: James W. (Feb. 16, 1903), Alta J (Bittle) (November 29, 1905), Eusebius B. (June 1, 1911), Leon G. (June 12, 1912) and Suellen L. (Wood) (October 31, 1917). From this list of children, Eusebius B. Baily, was my grandfather.
Eusebius Barnard Baily (1911 - 1983) married Dorothea Davison Pyle of Pocopson Township on January 18, 1947. They had one son, Eusebius Barnard Baily, born March 1, 1954. Eusebius Barnard Baily (1954 - ) married Jane Louise Bruce (January 21, 1955) of West Whiteland Township on November 7, 1981. They have two daughters: Meredith Faye Baily, born October 8, 1982, and Rebecca Anne Baily, born November 25, 1986.

THE HISTORY OF POCOPSON MEADOW FARM
Eusebius and Dorothea Baily bought the farm in 1957, for $40,000 from Eusebius' parent's estate. The main farmhouse was built in 1864, and still occupied by Dorothea Baily today. The main barn, built in 1850, is still used for housing young heifers. The slaughterhouse was used from 1870 through 1930. E. Barnard Baily restored the slaughterhouse in 1991. The milking parlor was built in 1966, and in 1974, it was updated from a four cow mailing unit to an eight cow milking unit. Although the original breed of cows raised and milked on the farm was Ayrshire, today they raise Brown Swiss Jersey, Lineback, and Ayrshire dairy cattle. Pocopson Meadow Farm exhibits their dairy cattle at numerous dairy cattle shows in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
