Not many people know about the once and growing country side town called Chadds Ford, but painters, illustrators, and artist are familiar with it all around the world. Once you say the names of Howard Pyle, NC Wyeth, and Jamie Wyeth immediately, they, and their famous paintings and wonderful illustrations are connected to the historical and inspiring place where they live, Chadds Ford. With three generations of famous artist, they are known all around the world.

NC ( Newells Convers ) Wyeth was born on October 22, 1882 in Needham, Massachusetts. He moved to Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania in 1902 to study illustration with Howard Pyle, who was then known as the father of American Illustration. Pyle taught NC and his other students his most important philosophy, which NC used in his work, "paint what you know or what you can come to know." The first kind of illustrations NC worked on were on the American Western frontier. Some of the books he illustrated were Train Robbery, Westward Ho!, The Merry Adventures of Robinhood, The Black Arrow, Rip Van Winkle, Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Last of the Mohicans.

NC married Carolyn Bockius in 1906. They had five children, Henriette, Carolyn, Nat (Nathaniel) Convers, Ann, and Andrew Newell. Henriette, his oldest worked on still life art. She also could read at age five and read the whole bible at eight. She married Peter Hurd and had three children. Peter also introduced the Wyeth family to his style of painting, egg tempera. Henriette was born in 1907 and died in 1998. His second child, Carolyn was always considered the most abstract person in the family and the family rebel. She loved animals and also became an important painter. She was born in 1909 and died in 1994. Nat worked for DuPont and became an engineer. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and made some important inventions. He married Caroline Pyle and had six children. Nat was born in 1911 and died 1990.

Ann was an accomplished composer and musician. One of her compositions was played at the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of 19, directed by Leopold Stokwoski. She married a man name John McCoy, who was a student of her father. They had three children. Ann was born in 1915 and is still alive(2003).

The youngest, Andrew was born to be an artist. He was often found drawling or painting and loved art and anything about it. His father even home schooled him because he didn't believe that good artist came from class rooms. Many of Andrew's paintings were sceneries inspired from Chadds Ford and him home in Maine. One famous painting is called Christina's World. Born in 1917, he still lives today(2003). He married Betsy James and they had two children, one whom included Jamie Wyeth, who also became a famous, well know and respected artist.

On October 19, 1945, NC and his three-year-old grandson, Newell Convers ( the second ) died when his car was struck by a train that used to run in Chadds Ford.

Through many accomplished years, the Wyeth family has shared the beauty of art from such an inspiring place, Chadds Ford. Of all the famous people who have ever lived here, these people have made the most impact. Many landscapes and sceneries from Chadds Ford have been shown to the world through their talent.
