Bridges of Pocopson Township

Painter's Bridge over the Brandywine at Pocopson was built in 1857. During the colonial era the Painter's were large land owners in the area. Coping and concrete built in 1920 for $4,250. It was replaced in 1935 by a bridge using the original abutments.

Pocopson Creek flows into the Brandywine about one half a mile below Painters Bridge. Route 926 is where the road crosses Pocopson Creek. The dates are conflicting for the Pocopson Creek Bridge, covered bridge, some records date 1978 others date 1872. Menander Wood put a new roof on the bridge in 1877 after a wind had blown off the original. The flood of 1884 made it necessary to rebuild the bridge and Menander Wood did so for $600.00. In 1936 the bridge was replaced by a concrete one which is still there.

In 1911-1912 Henry Corcoran built a flood bridge over the Brandywine at Lenape. The bridge allowed the road to be used even during the two or three times a year when there were major floods. The 450 foot stone bridge cost $17,952 to build. Prior to 1912, when there was a major flood it was impossible to cross the Brandywine at several points. This bridge is still in use today and is locate at route 52 and route 100. This is also the intersection where the Lenape Inn, the Lenape Park , and the Lenape Railroad Station are located. Once the hub of life in Lenape, Pocopson Township.
