The 2021 Patriots Challenge is a Black History Month contest sponsored by the Valley Forge Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for students in grades 6-8. The Patriots Challenge is a research contest that highlights the contributions made by patriots of African descent during the American Revolutionary War. Three students will be awarded a $150.00 prize for their entry. All entries must be received by Sunday, February 28, 2021.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit public service organization founded on January 13, 1913, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The sorority has grown into an international organization of over 900 chapters throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, and the Bahamas.

The Valley Forge Alumnae Chapter (VFAC) was chartered on February 10, 1991 and serves Bucks, Chester, and Montgomery Counties. Over twenty-five-years-ago, VFAC along with the National Park Service unveiled the Patriots of African Descent Monument located in Valley Forge National Historical Park. It is the first monument in a national park to honor Black patriots who served in the American Revolutionary War.

This recent video developed in December 2020 by the Valley Forge National Historical Park gives the history of the monument and tells how the sorority and the park service collaborated to establish the memorial. https://www.nps.gov/vafo/learn/historyculture/march-in-dst-video.htm

We hope that you will inform your students about the Patriots Challenge. If you have any questions or need more information about the contest, please contact Mandel J. Smith or M. Allyson Brown, MD, at patriots@dstvalleyforge.org .
