We believe that every student has a story, and every story matters. "My Story" is a new learning initiative at Patton Middle School with the purpose of capturing and communicating student progress and growth in a digital portfolio format. Using Google Sites, our students will tell the story of their Patton Middle School years, including, but not limited to, their goals, reflections on their learning, and evidence of growth academically, socially and emotionally. Our job is to present a structure and facilitate opportunities for our students to tell "their stories" without fear of ridicule, failure, or any other concern that prevents them from telling their authentic and significant story.
"My Story" is the result of conversations and deep thinking among teachers and administrators around the following questions related to student-led conferences:
During student-led conferences, are we communicating student progress, growth and performance to parents effectively and efficiently?
Should we be looking at a different system, e.g. digital portfolios as opposed to binders?
How can we connect and involve our Enrichment teachers in student-led conferences in a more meaningful and cohesive manner?
What changes can we make to maximize the parent experience during student-led conferences so that parents are drawn in and so that their student-led conference experience is different than their PowerSchool experience?
Every November, Patton Middle School teachers and students hold Student Led Conference Days. Student Led Conferences is a significant event that has existed at Patton Middle School for many years. The SLC provides a unique opportunity for students to share with parents about their learning experiences in a dedicated time and space with their teachers present. SLC’s represent a shift in how student progress and performance is reported to parents from the traditional, teacher-led parent conferences that you would have experienced at your child’s elementary school, to a more student-centered, student-driven parent conference. SLC’s aim to increase student engagement and ownership in learning and in how progress in learning is documented and reported out to parents.SLC’s also strive to increase student responsibility and accountability for learning through the process of reflection and goal setting. We are especially excited about SLC’s this year because our teachers and our students will be unveiling our brand new digital portfolio program titled My Story. We believe that every student has a story, and every story matters. We also believe that every child is defined by much more than a letter grade. Therefore, My Story is grounded in four guiding principles. Those principles are:
Identification of goals and reflection on goals
Evidence of growth
Reflections on growth
Evidence of creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking
To create My Story portfolios, we decided to have students use Google Sites, a tool that was already a part of their Google GSuite of apps. With the new Google Sites, building websites is easy. Just drag content where you need it. When you create a new site, it’s automatically added to Drive, like your other files stored in Drive. Google Sites websites are responsive, which means they’re optimized for tablets and smartphones, too.
